Cycling Inside: Our Women’s Prisons Programmes

Bringing freedom, confidence, and hope through cycling — inside women’s prisons and beyond. We use cycling to help women in prison reconnect with their health, community, and future.

What We Do

Cycle Together runs the UK’s first dedicated women’s prison cycling programmes.
We believe bikes are more than just transport — they’re a way for women to feel free, build self-worth, and take powerful steps towards life beyond the prison gates.

Inside, women face some of the biggest barriers: poor mental health, low confidence, and isolation. Our programmes give them tools that last far beyond the prison yard — boosting physical wellbeing, emotional resilience, and job prospects.

How It Works

Every session is about more than just learning to ride:

  • Guided cycle training: Safe, structured rides to build fitness and confidence.

  • Peer support: Women ride together, building trust, community and motivation.

  • Skill-building: Practical workshops in basic bike repair and coaching.

  • Next steps: Clear pathways into local cycling jobs and community rides after release.

Our Impact

“The bike gives me a reason to feel free — even inside.”
— Participant, HMP Downview

So far:

  • Over 100 women have joined our prison sessions.

  • More than 75% say they feel healthier, calmer, and more hopeful.
  • Pilot pathways are already connecting women with jobs in cycling, active travel and repair.

How You Can Help

This work is only possible because of people like you.

  • Partner with us: Offer training, job placements or mentoring.

  • Support us: Your contribution helps fund places for women inside.

  • Volunteer: Ride with us, share your skills, or help behind the scenes.

Every act of support helps a woman build confidence, freedom and new possibilities.
